Beginning Guitar: A First-Level Look at the Guitar by Matthew Nishimoto, Ph.D.

A comprehensive method book for beginning guitar in the classroom. Topics covered:

  • Pickstyle, fingerstyle, and classical approaches
  • Music fundamentals including standard music notation, tab, and chord/scale diagrams
  • History, parts, and types of guitar
  • Introduction to the basics of five styles: blues, country-western, rock, flamenco, and classical
  • Unit vocabulary, reviews, and real-world life connection activities ALSO interdisciplinary activities connecting to math, science, literature, history, and other educational topics (set at a middle to high school level)
  • Supplemental worksheets that align with the first three units of the method book.
  • This is one of the few methods that covers all of the nationals standards and practices set by NAfME, GFA, and the NAC.
  • This is one of the most affordable options
  • At this time, the method book is only available through purchase of license agreements for use of the PDF. A print version will be available on Amazon in 2025.
